Video: 18-wheeler drags a pinned sedan sideways down a Chicago highway as the driver desperately tries to flag down help

Must-see video captured the terrifying moment a tractor-trailer careened down a Chicago highway with a sedan trapped sideways beneath its undercarriage.

The driver of the Honda sedan, 19-year-old LayLisha Gardner, could be seen frantically waving from her window as smoke plumed from beneath her ruined tires.

What are the details?

According to a report from the Daily Mail, the incident took place Tuesday on Interstate 294 when Gardner attempted to change lanes.

The video showed the trailer moving at a fast clip down the highway as Gardner waved for help from her shattered window.

The apparently oblivious trucker — identified as 52-year-old Mohamed Yousif — reportedly failed to realize she’d gotten stuck beneath the massive trailer’s chassis.

A spokesperson for the Illinois State Police said that Yousif eventually realized he was carrying the extra freight, and stopped the truck in order for emergency responders to extract Gardner and her sedan from underneath the truck.

No injuries were initially reported in connection with the incident, and police have not announced any details regarding possible charges at the time of this reporting.

It remains unknown at the time of publication how far the truck drove down the busy interstate with the sedan wedged underneath its frame.

Authorities said that both lanes of the interstate were shut down for at least 15 minutes while police conducted an investigation into the accident.

The footage, according to the report, was initially captured by motorist Grzegorz Buczynski, a resident of Justice, Illinois, and shared to social media.

What else is there to know?

At least 5,005 large trucks were involved in fatal crashes in 2019 according to the National Safety Council. Large trucks accounted for at least 10 percent of all vehicles involved in the fatal crashes.

The National Safety Council defines a “large truck” as “any medium or heavy truck,” commercial or otherwise, “not including buses and motor homes, with a gross vehicle weight rating greater than 10,000 pounds.”
