Senior Biden administration officials are reportedly parading through newsrooms at major news networks and “holding briefings” to boost President Joe Biden’s diminished approval.
The irony, of course, is that Fox News was often accused of being “state-run media” for President Donald Trump by daring to air perspectives on the Trump administration that countered the mainstream media narrative.
What are the details?
Biden’s approval has been cratering for months as supply chain problems and other economic issues plague Americans. Polls have shown that Americans largely blame the Biden administration for such problems.
And the White House must agree, because officials are now sitting down with media newsrooms to rectify what they believe is unfavorable coverage of Biden.
Not only that, but senior Biden officials are allegedly deploying a weak argument to back their claims by saying the economy is in much better shape today than one year ago. While that may be true per se, the economy only required a recovery because of COVID-19 pandemic-related shutdowns, the severest of which happened in Democrat-controlled states and cities. Thus, once businesses reopened, the economy immeidately began to recover.
CNN’s Reliable Sources newsletter reported the details:
The White House, not happy with the news media’s coverage of the supply chain and economy, has been working behind the scenes trying to reshape coverage in its favor. Senior White House and admin officials — including NEC Deputy Directors David Kamin and Bharat Ramamurti, along with Ports Envoy John Porcari — have been briefing major newsrooms over the past week, a source tells me.
The officials have been discussing with newsrooms trends pertaining to job creation, economic growth, supply chains, and more. The basic argument that has been made: That the country’s economy is in much better shape than it was last year. I’m told the conversations have been productive, with anchors and reporters and producers getting to talk with the officials…
What was the reaction?
The stunning reporting immediately triggered accusations of the mainstream media carrying the Biden administration’s water, noting CNN’s positive spin.
“Media corporations meeting in secret with WH officials to discuss how to present a more optimistic view of Biden’s economic policies seems to me to be a bit like . . . . . . state TV. But I’m glad (and unsurprised) to hear from CNN that the ‘conversations have been productive,'” Glenn Greenwald reacted.
“Isn’t this concerning? As a correspondent, I always hated it when a political called me and lobbied me. Give me the facts and I report the facts, shaping coverage with the news division is pushing propaganda. ‘Conversations have been productive’?? Wow..and to admit it,” Adam Housley, a former top correspondent at Fox News, reacted.
The news comes after Washington Post writer Dana Milbank attempted to reframe the narrative surrounding Biden and the media by claiming the media “treats Biden as badly as — or worse than — Trump.”
